Fazl backs presidential poll on July 30

25 Jul, 2013

Chief of JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rahman has backed Supreme Court decision to hold presidential elections on July 30, saying it will help members of Electoral College to be available for casting votes. According to his Spokes-person Jan Achakzai, the Maulana said he had personally requested to hold election earlier than the stipulated time and suggested dates as July 29 or 30.
Since majority of members of the electoral college had to be involved in religious rituals during the last days of Holy month of Ramazan or had to be in their home constituencies, they could not be made available on August 6 for casting votes. He said it was his observation that holding elections earlier, they would not be unconstitutional. He also appealed to all political parties to accept this decision as it was for the convenience of all members electoral college. He said it would have been unhelpful when 45 members were already absent due to mini-elections.-PR
