The Lahore High Court has suspended the new constitution of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which came into force on August 19. Justice Shahid Mubeen of the Lahore High Court has issued the orders to suspend the new constitution of the cricket board. The order comes after applicants Ahmed Nawaz and Munir Ahmed approached the High Court for the suspension of the new constitution which came into force on August 19. It was argued in the petition that the new constitution restricts cricketing of the country to six associations. They further argued that the position of governing board's members has been abolished, while the new constitution restricts undemocratic and democratic forces. The new constitution also completely ignores the process of accountability. Just days ago, the federal government has issued a notification of the new constitution of the PCB. Under the new constitution, the Prime Minister will be able to give a policy guideline to the cricket board. However, the Prime Minister would no longer have the authority to remove the chairman. This comes after the removal of seventh clause, which was about the chairman’s removal and the dissolution of the governing board. In the latest constitution the PCB chief is further empowered while as per the new constitution the chairman will be accountable to the board of governors. It is pertinent to inform that after the suspension of the new constitution, the old constitution of 2014 has been restored.
