This is apropos a Business Recorder op-ed "Consumers taken for a ride?" carried by the newspaper yesterday. The writers, Prof. Khalid Mirza who served as the Founder Chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan, and at present teaches at the Lahore University of Management Sciences and Dr Joseph Wilson who served as Chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan and at present teaches as adjunct Professor at McGill University's Faculty of Law have explained what actually constitutes a fair competition and what not.
In this regard, I want to say that it is true that the law in relation to approval of mergers clearly states that no undertaking "shall enter into a merger which substantially lessens competition by creating or strengthening a dominant position in the relevant market. The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), in my view, is now required to explain to people how it looks at this law.
