According to Pakistani media reports despite aggressive awareness campaigns of Expanded Programmes on Immunization (EPI), 47,099 children were reportedly barred from polio vaccination because of their parents refusal.
An official from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed this year Pakistan saw 72 cases of polio compared to 58 for all of 2012.
Pakistan is among three countries in the world where the infectious disease is still widespread.
"Pakistan has reported 72 polio cases which is highest in comparison to two other countries with the disease, as Nigeria has 50 cases and Afghanistan reported only nine during 2013," Elias Durry, emergency coordinator for the WHO's Polio Eradication Pakistan Program, was quoted as saying.
Reports reveal Pakistan last year had 58 cases while Nigeria had 110 and Afghanistan had 31. This year six cases have emerged in Punjab, six in Sindh and 10 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Majority of the cases have been reported in the unruly tribal areas along the Afghan border.
The Pakistani Taliban reportedly hindered the vaccination campaign claiming it to be a cover for espionage.
"We successfully immunised over 33 million children during the recent vaccination campaign while 2.3 million children were recorded missed during the campaign," Durry said in a statement.
