imageJAKARTA: Indonesia's current account deficit will remain below 3 pct throughout 2014, Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo said on Thursday, reiterating earlier statements from the central bank.

The deficit was 3.3 percent last year, and central bank officials have repeatedly said the figure would be below 3 percent this year.

"In general, BI will guard monetary policy like it has been doing," Martowardojo said, noting that the bank would keep its monetary policy tight. Earlier on Thursday, another BI official said recent weakness in the rupiah currency was a result of the current account deficit and the elections, but that this trend would only be temporary.

Data on Monday showed sliding exports pushed Indonesia's trade balance into its second biggest monthly deficit in five years in April, a surprise that renewed pressure on the rupiah and sparked some concerns that Jakarta may miss its current account deficit target.
