GENESIS AND DEVELOPMENT: Fauji Foundation Hospital was our first welfare institution, established as a 50 bedded T.B. hospital in Rawalpindi in 1959. The foundation stone for the hospital was laid by Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan, President of Pakistan. It was subsequently expanded and renamed "Veterans hospital for Chest Diseases" and inaugurated by General Muhammad Musa, Commander-in-Chief, Pakistan Army in 1964.
In 1966, the Artificial Limb Centre was added to its establishment and to date 162,000 artificial limbs have been provided. All our hospitals were later named as Fauji Foundation Hospital (FFH). Over the years, the Fauji Foundation Hospital Rawalpindi has undergone many developments and various words and departments added. A 200 bed ward was added in 1991.
The foundation stone for this ward was laid by the VCOAS General Sawar Khan, on 19 Jan 1984. It was inaugurated later by COAS General Mirza Aslam Beg.
THE PRESENT: Presently Fauji Foundation Hospital Rawalpindi has 581 beds. It has 21 wards, 2 main OTs, approximately 24 specialists and 60 other doctors on its staff. In the year 2003-2004, the hospital treated a total of 316,878 patients (including 16,570 indoor patients).
This figure includes 9801 civilians as well. Approx 25% of the patients belong to the chronic category who carry 2 or more chronic diseases.
MEDIX: Fauji Foundation Hospital Rawalpindi is also a pioneer in computerisation. The Medix System began development in 2003. This system brings the entire working of the hospital on-line. From initial registration to final exit from the hospital (after treatment), the patient is handled and processed on the electronic medium. This system has resulted in the following advancement:-
-- Persons posing as beneficiaries or dependents of beneficiaries, have been discouraged. As a result there has been a drop of over 25% in the patient registration, sparing more time for those resources who are entitled.
-- Patient treatment and medical history is available on-line. Thus those who come to the hospital without medical record also have a chance to get logical treatment.
-- Lab tests are available on-line. Patients do not have to run after the test results. Their waiting time is reduced.
-- Medicine prescriptions are on the computer. Thus the store inventory and expenditure are more controllable.
-- Costing and billing is now greatly more accurate and fast.
-- The system has a huge potential to track and monitor a large amount of data. This data can be put to use by the management and the administration, for improvement in treatment, patient care, in costing and inventory control, and in overall accountability.
-- Once perfected here, the Medix System will also be deployed in other Fauji Hospitals. To start with plans have been made for FFH Lahore, FFH Peshawar and Shaukat Omar Memorial FFH Karachi.
EXPANSION AND REFURBISHMENT PROJECT: The Expansion and Refurbishment Plan of Fauji Foundation Hospital Rawalpindi was approved in 2004. In the first phase, the existing bed strength of 581 beds will be increased to 800 beds with state-of-the-art operation theatres, at a cost of Rs 581 million for building and Rs 400 million for electro-medical equipment. Subsequently the bed strength will be increased to 1200 beds. The hospital will encompass all treatment departments and provide state-of-the-art medical care at tertiary level.
The hospital is also a teaching hospital, catering to the under graduates of Foundation University Medical College and also to post graduates, leading to FCPS, in various disciplines.
The Foundation University Medical College, established in the year 2000, has provide an impetus to improved health care to our beneficiaries by the appointment of experienced and highly qualified health professionals as Professors and Associate Professors.
The inauguration ceremony of this Expansion and Refurbishment Projects is being performed by General Pervez Musharraf, President of Pakistan in March 2005. This ceremony is also doubling as the main event of our Golden Jubilee. Very appropriately, it is at FFH Rawalpindi, which was our first project for the welfare of our beneficiaries, which essentially, is our raisond'tre.
