Siemens' overall involvement in the region dates back more than 130 years. The company's name first became known through the construction of the Indo-European telegraph line from London to Calcutta in 1870. Siemens' first office in what is now Pakistan opened in 1922.
The Siemens Pakistan Engineering Company Ltd was founded in 1953 as a private company, and in 1963, the company was reorganised as a public limited company.
Siemens enjoys a leading position in Pakistan in the areas of Information and Communications, Power Transmission and Distribution, Industrial Solutions, Power Generation, Automation and Drives, Medical Solutions, and Transportation Systems.
To date Siemens has added over 2,500 MW to Pakistan's power generation capacity, which represents 15% of the country's installed output also, around 60% of Pakistan's four million telephone lines have been supplied by Siemens . The first desalination plant in the history of the country is also being installed by Siemens in DHA Karachi with a capacity of 3.0 Million Gallons potable water per Day. On completion, the plant will also be producing electricity of 94 MW to meet the growing energy demands.
Siemens is not only a large tax payer, contributing approximately Rs 1.2 billion annually to exchequer, it is also the largest employer of graduate engineers in the country. Taking into account it's joint venture with the government of Pakistan TIP and recently acquired CTI and all other activities that generate employment it provides employment to more than six thousand persons with it's presence in Pakistan.
Young engineers employed by Siemens Pakistan are also influencing the perception of Pakistan in international markets by their excellent performance in such competitive markets as the United Arab Emirates where Siemens has set up a number of grid stations some of whom are supplying power to important landmark projects like the tallest tower and the largest shopping mall.
Siemens provides solutions in a number of fields and Siemens A.G. Germany has recently launched a project to take into consideration the problems of Mega cities. By the efforts of the Management of Siemens Pakistan, Karachi has been included in this project with the other leading cities of the world which will not only attract attention to the problems of this city but also bring in investment for their resolution through solutions based on state-of-the-art technology.
Siemens is actively involved in university education in Pakistan providing full scholarships to students in the field of medicine, engineering and business studies. In 1997, the company set up a program to award gold medals to the best engineering students at Pakistani universities. Siemens offers full scholarships to students in the fields of medicine, engineering and business, and runs a three-year apprenticeship course at its facility in Karachi. The services of Siemens to the community and its policies and achievements have been lauded by a cross section of society reflected in the following awards.
