floodwater 400ROJHAN MAZARI: As many as 15 persons have lost their lives and around 277,772 others have been affected by the floods caused by hill torrents in the Rajanpur district.

This was informed to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in a briefing here on the losses caused by the floods.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) Ghazi Amanullah briefed the Prime Minister that crops on 93,290 acres of land had been damaged in the district. Some 176 schools were damaged by the floods and seven of them have been made operational so far, he said, adding that efforts were being made to restore the remaining ones despite flood water and other hurdles.

He said that over 8,870 houses were damaged, 3,320 of them partially and 5,550 completely. The floods also damaged a 58-kilometre road network and 32-kilometre part of it has been restored, he added.

The DCO said that 10,386 people were shifted to safe places while the district had received 201 truckloads of relief items so far.

He said that some 2,914 people had been provided shelter and food in nine relief camps.

He said that two basic health units were also affected, which had been made operational.

The DCO informed the Prime Minister that water of monsoon rains over the Suleman Mountain Range reached Rajanpur through six hill torrents. Two of them, including Kaha and Chachar, caused most of the damage due to an abnormal surge in water level, he added.

He said that usually 8000-10000 cusec water passed through the Kaha hill torrent. This year, however, 85,000 cusec water, which is over eight times higher than the normal level, was recorded while some 50,000 cusecs water passed through Chachar hill torrent.

The Prime Minister sought details of the requirements of the district and pledged to utilise all resources to provide relief to the affected people.

He said that the federal government would make all-out efforts to rehabilitate the affected people.
