imageISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday called for a report as to how many famine-stricken people of Thar had been provided relief and assistance so far.

The three-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, was hearing of a suo moto case regarding the death of over 100 children due to acute malnutrition and deceases in the Tharparkar district of Sindh.

During the course of proceedings, Sindh Advocate General Abdul Fatah submitted a report on the situation in Thar.

Justice Azmat Saeed inquired why did the government not realize the gravity of the situation in time despite last year's drought in Tharparkar.

The Advocate General replied that the Sindh Chief Minister had directed the officials concerned to take necessary measures in view of the looming crisis.

To a court's query, the AG replied that normally it rained in May and June, but last year no rain occurred. The chief minister had asked the officials concerned to get prepared for the looming crisis.

Justice Saeed inquired then why were actions not taken. Only 100,000 out of total Thar population of 1.1 million had received aid, he observed.

The court called for a report as to how many people of Thar had so far been provided relief and assistance and adjourned the hearing.
