 FAISALABAD: The Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) has released statistics of violence on women in Punjab.

In a joint statement issued by Naseem Anthony, Ms Shazia George and Ms Nazia Sardar, representatives of the AWAM, expressed grave concerns over incidents of violence on women.

At least 1,469 incidents of violence on women were reported in Punjab during the first six months of 2011 (from January to June) according to the data compiled by the AWAM.

On the international day for elimination of all forms of violence on women, the representatives of AWAM revealed statistics of gender based violence in Punjab in first six months of this year, according to which, 123 females were raped while 46 were gang raped, 158 were murdered while 58 were killed in the name of honour, 621 were kidnapped, 65 committed suicide, 27 were burnt through acid throwing and stove-burning, 152 were beaten, 20 were harassed and seven were sold.
