ISLAMABAD: The Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-1 (C-1) has operated safely and without interruption for 427 days during Cycle 18, setting a new record for the longest continuous operating cycle achieved by a nuclear power plant in the history of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

The record was accompanied by strong international performance indicators. C-1 achieved a World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Performance Indicator Index score of 100 during each of the first two quarters of 2026, placing it among the leading nuclear power plants globally in terms of operational performance, reliability and safety.

The achievement reflects the technical expertise, discipline and teamwork of the engineers, scientists and other personnel of Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS), supported by the continued guidance of PAEC management and strict adherence to nuclear safety standards.

C-1’s performance also demonstrates the reliability and cost-effectiveness of nuclear power. According to information presented in the Senate of Pakistan in September 2026, electricity generated by CNPGS cost Rs 6.876 per unit — the second-lowest generation cost after hydropower.

The PAEC currently operates six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW, supplying clean, sustainable and low-cost electricity to the national grid.

The record achieved by C-1 further highlights PAEC’s contribution to Pakistan’s energy security through the safe, efficient and reliable operation of its nuclear power plants.

The PAEC congratulated the entire CNPGS team and acknowledged the professionalism and commitment of all those who contributed to the achievement.
