ISLAMABAD: At least one civilian was killed and five members of the same family were injured when a mortar shell allegedly fired by Afghan Taliban forces struck a residential house in the Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan, prompting a strong retaliatory response from Pakistani security forces, security sources said on Tuesday.

According to security sources, Afghan Taliban forces targeted civilian settlements along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in an unprovoked attack, causing casualties and damage to residential property.

The incident sparked widespread anger among local residents over the targeting of civilian populations.

Security sources said the Pakistan Army responded swiftly and effectively to the cross-border aggression, destroying several Afghan forces’ check posts in retaliatory action.

They said Pakistani troops deployed along the border remained fully alert and prepared to thwart any further aggression from across the frontier. The sources added that the Pakistan Army’s retaliatory operation against Afghan forces was continuing following the attack on innocent civilians.
