Rehman Malik submitted his written apology before the three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed.

Malik appeared in the court, requested it to accept his apology and sought mercy for himself.

He said that he did not intend to interfere into the court's proceedings by influencing the PSM case investigation.

The court adjourned the hearing for 10 days. Later talking to media persons outside the Supreme Court building, the Interior Minister said he had always respected the courts and would continue to do so in future.

"I was trying to enhance the scope of investigations by taking the step," he explained his stance.

He said he initiated the investigation as he was asked by the National Assembly to give details to the House.

"The court has said that it will hear me later. It suits me as the government is set to end in a few weeks and I will be free of all duties to present my case properly."

He said he had submitted his reply to the Supreme Court as he had always respected the courts.

The Interior Minister urged the Punjab government to take action against Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which was necessary for peace in the country.
