ISLAMABAD: A petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday against the chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain over his May 12 controversial speech.

The petition was filed by Barrister Zafarullah of Watan Party after Altaf Hussain made controversial statements on television in a live address on May 12.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the case. During the course of proceeding, Barrister Zafarullah argued that Altaf Hussain had made comments against the sovereignty of Pakistan. However, the Chief Justice remarked that the court did not handle cases based upon any comments in a speech.

Thus the apex court declared that Zafarullah did not have enough proof against his claim and thus dismissed his petition.
