More than 300ft Jamrao canal breach damages wildlife sanctuary

The irrigation department brought in some machinery but could not plug the breach even after 48 hours as the machinery proved insufficient.

The irrigation staff looked helpless as the water continued gushing. Sub-Engineer Ghulam Hussain said that they worked last night using a generator as there was no electricity in the area.

More machinery and bulldozers have been called to plug the breach, he added.

Wildlife Inspector Qaimuddin Dahri told PPI that eggs of crocodiles perished as they came out of the canal to lay eggs.

Over 30 jackals and dozens of rabbits have been washed away by the water.

Meanwhile, MNA Azra Pechuho visited the area and expressed dissatisfaction over the slackness of irrigation officials in plugging the breach.
