NEW YORK: The S&P 500 stock index topped the 2,000 mark for the first time ever in early trade Monday, as US markets continued their march higher.

The broad-market index, up more than eight percent for the year, was helped by comments over the weekend from US and European central bank chiefs promising more economic support where needed.
