ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah on Tuesday said that he is ready for mediation between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the larger interest of the country if asked to do so.

Talking to media, he said the prevailing political situation is not in favour of the country as it is portraying a negative image in the world and harmful for its sovereignty.

He condemned the Faisalabad incident and urged the government to show restraint and hold dialogue with PTI from where it was terminated.

Khursheed Shah to a query, said that Pakistan Peoples Party being a seasoned party, is with the government not for any personal gains but to save the system, democracy, constitution and the Parliament.

Lauding the appointment of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), he said the appointment is purely on merit and with consensus of all political parties excluding PTI as it did not cooperate in this matter.

He held election tribunals responsible for the current political instability and urged CEC to take action against those who did not perform properly within the stipulated time.

Regarding provincial members of Election Commission, he proposed that they should resign voluntarily as they have been accused of pre-poll rigging in the general elections 2013.

The Opposition Leader repeated his demand for decreasing the government's tenure to four years, saying it is in the interest of the government and the state.
