06 Jan, 2004

The chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Syed Ali Gilani, has appealed to Saarc leaders to persuade India to end the sufferings of Kashmiris and initiate a serious, sincere and meaningful dialogue to resolve the Kashmir issue.
According to Kashmir Media Services, in a letter addressed to Saarc Heads of State on the occasion of 12th Saarc Summit, the APHC chief emphasised that all efforts for peace in the region would prove futile if the Kashmir dispute remained unresolved.
He said that the illegal occupation of Kashmir and the unparalleled violations of basic rights are no secret to the world.
Gilani said that Kashmiris have been rendering huge sacrifices simply to attain their legitimate right to live a life of dignity and honour in accordance with their wishes and aspirations
He said that the main task before Saarc is improving the lot of the people in the region which requires united and concerted efforts on the part of respective Heads of State.
"All your efforts in this direction will, no doubt, bear fruit given the perseverance and determination that is being demonstrated by you all. We believe the basic requirement of overall improvement in the quality of life in the region is the political and ideological freedom with a right to live a life of dignity and honour".
