The death toll after an overloaded bus crashed into a canal in Bhakkar rose to 54 on Friday after emergency workers recovered dozens more bodies from the wreckage. The bus plunged into the canal on Thursday afternoon.
"We have received 54 bodies so far and there may still be more," Mumtaz Ahmed, a doctor at the local hospital, told Reuters, adding that all those killed had drowned.
The dead included two children and three women.
Police said the bus had a capacity of 40 passengers but was carrying far more. It lost control after one of its axles broke crossing a bridge and plunged into the canal.
