No wheat shortage in country

There is no shortage of wheat in any part of the country, Agriculture Development Commissioner, Ministry of Food and Agriculture Dr Mohammad Hanif told PTV on Saturday.
In the wheat year, which was considered from March 1 to April 30, there were sufficient stocks of 20.2 million tones wheat while requirement of the wheat was about 20 million tones annually.
Elaborating the stock position of wheat in the country he said, this year the country procured 19.2 million tones wheat and had carry forward stock of one million tones.
Punjab was producing about 81 percent of the total wheat of the country, he said.
Answering a question about price fluctuation of wheat, he said the government regularly monitors the prices on daily basis.
When asked about the shortage of wheat in the province of Sindh, he said there was no shortage and arrangements were only being made to avoid any possible shortage in future.
The agriculture development commissioner said wheat was also being imported to enhance and strengthen the reserves of wheat.
