Encroachments on footpaths

18 Jan, 2004

It is unfortunate that footpaths in many areas of Karachi are being misused to a great extent and illegally occupied by various shopkeepers, hotels and auto workshops due to which the pedestrians face great inconvenience and are compelled to walk on roads which is not only dangerous but also is a cause of road accidents and traffic disturbance.
It is observed that many people are freely doing business in the unauthorised portion and continuously making illegal constructions on footpaths in the area like Saddar, Akber Road, Tariq Road (PECHS).
In some places, footpaths are being used for charged parking of motorcycles and bicycles etc.
The rapid encroachments on footpaths show that KMC, KDA and Land Departments are not paying the required attention and ignoring the prevailing situation deliberately.
The government is requested to take serious action in order to eliminate encroachment from footpaths.
