Piaf seeks early construction of Kalabagh Dam

23 Jan, 2004

In a bid to evolve consensus on construction of Kalabagh Dam, formation of a parliamentary committee is a right step in right direction, hence all patriotic segments should extend maximum co-operation to the committee members.
Pakistan and Industrial & Traders Associations Front (Piaf) Chairman, Sheikh Muhammad Arshad and LCCI Executive Committee members Mubashar Sheikh and Raees A Sheikh stated this in a joint statement issued here Thursday.
They said that despite passage of over 20 years, the issue of Kalabagh Dam was still hanging in balance.
Despite the fact that this dam would not only resolve decades old water shortage problem, but also help in slashing power rates mainly due to production of cheap electricity.
Advocating early construction of Kalabagh Dam, they said that because of non-availability of water reservoirs, millions of gallons of water, was going waste every year.
If the present water situation exists for a few more years, the results would be disastrous. Billions of rupees were already spent on conducting feasibility report for this dam, they said. They said that both President and Prime Minister had also termed Kalabagh Dam construction essential for country's economy, therefore, its construction should be started forthwith.
Sh Muhammad Arshad said that the country was suffering because of fears and rumours.
He said that the committee must not waste any more time and should give go-ahead signal to the project.
