Gwadar being developed as commercial port: foreign office

01 Feb, 2004

The Foreign Office spokesman on Saturday said that the Gwadar Port was being developed as commercial port and that would enhance country's economic and trade relations with countries of Central Asia, Middle East and Europe.
When his attention was drawn to an AP report datelined Bombay, alleging that Gwadar Port was being developed as a naval base for China, he said that this report was way off the mark and tendentious.
The spokesman said: "Gwadar was being developed as a commercial port, which would enhance Pakistan's economic and trade relations with countries of Central Asia, Middle East and Europe.
It would provide a two-way access for commercial traffic to Central Asia and contribute in a big way to transform Pakistan into a commercial hub for the region."
The spokesman added that Pakistan appreciated the valuable assistance of China in the development of Gwadar Port. It was a further manifestation of fruitful economic co-operation between the two countries, he said.
