The city police on Friday have denied any attack on any police station during the strike call by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) to express resentment over the government action against Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan and other scientists.
Senior police officials denied attack on Pirabad police station and said some miscreants pelted stones on the station but calling it an attack was incorrect.
The officials further said that no major incident took place though at Banaras Chowk attempt was made to resort to violence but the situation was brought under control and returned to normal after Juma Prayers.
Heavy contingent of police and rangers were deployed at all strategic and sensitive areas to avert any untoward incident, the official added.
The strike call by the MMA received overwhelming response in the city as about 50 percent of small and large businesses stayed shut while the traffic was very thin till evening as the transporters kept their vehicles off the roads.
The commuters faced hardship as the transport turnout was low throughout the day but in the afternoon a few buses on different routes were witnessed plying on the roads.
The big and small markets including Jama Cloth, Iqbal Cloth Market, M. A Jinnah Road, Juna Market, Liaquatabad Super Market, Haidery Market, Tariq Road, Aisha Manzil, Water Pump, Babar Market Landhi and all other important markets of the city remained closed on account of the strike.
Some areas did receive mixed response of strike call with a few untoward incidents of tyre burning including burning of a minibus, however many city markets do observe weekly holiday on Fridays, which served MMA's objectives nicely.
