The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has plans in hand for the upgradation of its large flotilla of tugs, pilot boats, hopper barges and dredges.
Although the flotilla of harbour crafts is regularly upgraded to cater to the shipping requirements, the upgradation will equip Karachi port sufficiently to meet the requirements of deeper draught vessels and maintenance of a deeper channel.
According to details available here, two self-propelled split hopper barges will cost Rs 536 million.
The plans and estimates have already been approved by the KPT Board and the government.
Similarly, detailed technical proposals were obtained from Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW).
After approval by the KPT Chairman for consolidated cost of the work of Rs 195 million, the KSEW was asked to confirm the cost. It, however, responded with a cost of Rs 240 million.
After discussions, the KSEW quoted the final price of Rs 210 million.
Plans and estimated cost of one anchor hoist vessel have already been approved by the KPT Board.
The KPT has received approval for award of work to the consultant for preparation of specifications.
