16 Feb, 2004

A week-long grand National Horse and Cattle Show erupts into action from Monday at the gaily decorated Fortress Stadium encompassing the diverse but rich culture and showcasing the agriculture wealth of the country.
For years, the cattle show had been a regular feature of Lahore's rich cultural life, but remained discontinued for eight years because of lack of funds and other reasons.
The day time main events will be a unity show, army band display, callisthenics, cavalcade of livestock, grey hound race, folk dance, tent pegging, motorcycle trick-riding by the military police, bullock cart race, horse and camel dance.
The evening programme would include folk dance, torch parade, night horse and camel pegging, fireworks and pyrotechnic display. The free fall by the Army paratrooper will be held on February 16 and 20 and dog show from February 17 to 19.
Organised under the patronage of Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, the arrangements have been supervised by the Punjab Local Government Department with the assistance of Information, Communication and Works, Education and Tourism Departments, Lahore District Government, Army and Rangers.
The authorities have made fool-proof security arrangements with the help of Army and Rangers to prevent any untoward incident at the Fortress Stadium.
Entry in all the events will be through invitation. Separate enclosures have been reserved for children and students of Lahore educational institutions, showing interest in allowing their students to watch the show.
The Lahore Traffic Police has also made arrangements for the parking of the vehicles and ensure smooth passage for traffic during the Horse and Cattle Show.
With Jashan-e-Baharan already being enjoyed by the people from across the country, who have thronged the city.
