THE RUPEE: gap widens in kerb and interbank rates

Gap between the interbank and kerb rates widened on Tuesday as the rupee shed ten paisa against the dollar for buying at Rs 57.40 and lost 15 paisa for selling at Rs 57.50 in the open market.
The dollar was in demand as several investors covered their short-term positions, dealers said. Some other moneychangers said that the accelerating dollar buying in the The rupee also lost 25 paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 72.08 and Rs 72.38 on slight increase in the single currency's value in the international markets.
The dollar moved a little in the world markets versus the euro and yen, they added.
INTERBANK RATES: The rupee, however, managed to recover three paisa in terms of the dollar in interbank market for buying and selling at Rs 57.30 and Rs 57.32, respectively.

The dollar commenced trading at overnight closing levels of Rs 57.40 and Rs 57.50 on buying and selling counters, respectively.
The opening rates continued to prevail throughout the day. In the absence of fluctuation in greenback's value, the trading volume remained considerably low, dealers said.
However, the rupee could not maintain its overnight position and registered loss in relation to pound sterling.
The pound's buying rate improved from Monday's closing rate of Rs 106.65 to Rs 107.25, while selling rate moved up from Rs 106.95 to Rs 107.55, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 57.35 (buying) and Rs 57.45 (selling) against same previous rates. The ever-favourite greenback did not observe any further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 57.35 (buying) and Rs 57.45 (selling) respectively.
Pound sterling opened at Rs 107 (buying) and Rs 107.20 (selling) against overnight value of Rs 108 (buying) and Rs 108.20 (selling) respectively.
It did not witness any further change in the second session and closed at Rs 107 (buying) and Rs 107.20 (selling) respectively.
Canadian dollar opened at Rs 43 (buying) and Rs 43.20 (selling) against last rate of Rs 43.25 (buying) and Rs 43.40 (selling).
Canadian currency did not observe any further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 43 (buying) and Rs 43.20 (selling) respectively.
