'Parliament panels to strengthen democracy'

Early completion of the Standing Committees of Senate and National Assembly could further strengthen the democratic process in the country.
This was stated by former Federal Minister, Senator S.M. Zafar on Thursday while talking to newsmen here at Supreme Court.
He said proper functioning of the Standing Committees of the Upper and Lower houses could ensure supremacy of the parliament.
S. M. Zafar, PML-Q leader, said Standing Committees are integral and important segment of democratic institutions and the effective functioning of these committees could play a useful and effective role in the solution of problems of the people and to further improve the foundation for a strong democratic system in the country.
He was of the view that delay in the formation of Standing Committees could create a negative impact on the present democratic system.
S.M. Zafar said these Standing Committees could also prove a strong check on the establishment with highlighting their performance before the elected representatives.
Replying to a question, he said, leader of opposition both in the Senate and National Assembly are essential part of a strong democratic system, therefore, the issue of appointment of leaders of opposition in both the houses should also be resolved without any delay.
He said the Legal Framework Order (LFO) issue has been settled now, therefore, the issue of appointment of the leaders of opposition in both the houses could be resolved without any delay.
Replying to a question about legal hurdles in the unification of various factions of PML in the parliament, S.M. Zafar said he has been assigned the task to prepare the necessary legislation in this regard.
He however, hoped that all formalities would be completed and after approval from the parliament to the new legislation in this regard, all PML groups in the Parliament would be united under one banner before March 23 this year.
