'New reservoirs crucial for uplift'

In view of looming threat of acute water shortage in the country, storage enhancement is need of the hour as the existing storage capacity is too short of demand.
This was stated by former chairman, Pakistan Agriculture Research Council, Dr Amir Mohammad, chairman IRSA Rahim Khan Zarcon and president Tahreek Istaqlal Rahmat Khan Wardik, while speaking in a PTV programme on Friday.
Dr Amir Mohammad said: "Construction of new water reservoirs is imperative for the progress of the country as without water capacity enhancement, desired pace of development cannot be achieved."
He said: "Besides emergent measures for construction of new dams, proper water management is need of the time as the level of water across the globe, including Pakistan, is depleting at an alarming proportion."
"In the coming years, the country may face the worst water shortage if the issue is not timely addressed," he added.
He said water wastage should be minimised and irrigation methods will have to switch over to modern techniques.
Farmers should carefully apply efficient and modern methods of irrigation to achieve maximum advantages from the minimum amount of water, he said.
Chairman IRSA Rahim Khan said: "Measures are needed to tackle the growing water-related problems."
He said, already many years have passed without addition of any water reservoir, which should have been constructed keeping in view the future requirements. "Pakistan's future hinges on availability of water," he added.
