The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) late on Friday awarded Thai rice in an international tender for 152,500 tonnes of rice as food aid for Iraq, a grain market source said on Saturday.
"All of the rice will come from Thailand," the source, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters, adding that the specification was listed as five percent broken max, grade B, low chalky kernels.
The international tender for 152,500 tonnes of rice and 450,000 tonnes of hard milling wheat for Iraq was open from March 4 to 8.
The source declined immediate comment on the wheat award.
Chicago Board of Trade rough rice traders were on edge on Friday ahead of news of the WFP award as any fresh US rice sales to Iraq could open a door to a once lucrative market for US rice producers.
