An army soldier was killed and five others were injured in a clash with drug smugglers in a remote south-western town bordering Afghanistan, officials said on Sunday.
They said that a team of the army-led Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) launched a search operation on a tip off that drug smugglers were hiding in Chaghi district, some 300 kilometres west of Quetta on Saturday.
"The smugglers armed with heavy weapons opened indiscriminate fire on the ANF team resulting in injuries to six soldiers," an ANF officials said.
One of them died of his injuries when the wounded soldiers were being flown in a helicopter to a military hospital in Quetta, said the official who did not want to be named.
There was no recovery of narcotics and there were no arrests, he added.
