Pakistan defy Tendulkar heroics to beat India

17 Mar, 2004

Sachin Tendulkar surpassed 13,000 one-day runs with his 37th century on Tuesday, but could not prevent Pakistan from defeating India by 12 runs in the second one-dayer here.
Pakistan, who piled up a mammoth 329-6 after taking first strike in the day-night international, bowled out India to 317 despite Tendulkar's masterly 141 to level the five-match series 1-1.
President Pervez Musharraf watched the match for an hour before the dinner break alongside 19,300 home fans at the heavily-guarded Pindi stadium.
Fiery fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express, revelled in his 100th one-dayer to pick up three wickets. New-ball partner Mohammad Sami had 3-41.
The foundation for Pakistan's total was laid by openers Shahid Afridi and Yasir Hameed, who hit strokeful half-centuries during an opening stand of 138.
Afridi, selected for the first time since Pakistan's World Cup loss to India last year in South Africa, smashed 80 off 58 balls with the help of four sixes and 10 boundaries.
Hameed, the more circumspect of the two, batted till the 35th over to make 86 before he was run out following a mix-up with his captain Inzamam-ul Haq.
Tendulkar, already the most successful batsman in one-day history, made a gallant effort to win the match for India before he was caught in the deep off Shoaib Malik in the 39th over with 85 still needed.
The 30-year-old, who hit 17 boundaries and a six, returned with a tally to 13,090 runs from 330 matches, far ahead of the rest of the pack.
The next in line of run-getters is Inzamam with 9,607, while his Indian counterpart Sourav Ganguly is second in the hundreds' list with 22.
Tendulkar put on 69 for the third wicket with Ganguly and 105 for the fourth with Rahul Dravid, whose 36 was the second highest score for India.
Earlier, Afridi and Hameed plundered 81 runs in the first 10 overs and brought up 100 by the 13th over before Afridi's brilliant knock ended tamely when he missed a heave off part-timer Yuvraj Singh and was bowled.
Pakistan moved to 191-1 by the 29th over, before left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra hit back with two wickets off successive balls.
Nehra, who was retained in the side despite being ruled out by the team management on Monday due to an ankle injury, clean bowled Inzamam for 29 and then trapped Moin Khan leg-before first ball.
Nehra finished with 3-44 but will miss the remaining three matches after splitting the webbing of his left hand while trying to stop a ball on his follow through.
Pakistan slipped to 249-5, but Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq plundered 50 runs in the last five overs to steer Pakistan past the 300-run mark.
Malik remained unbeaten on 30 while Razzaq scored a rapid 31 not out off just 19 deliveries.
Razzaq became only the fourth Pakistani after Wasim Akram, Imran Khan and Afridi to claim the double of 3,000 runs and 100 wickets in one-day cricket.
The first match at Karachi on Saturday had ended as the highest-scoring one-dayer in history with Pakistan making 344-8 in reply to India's 349-7.
The remaining matches of the absorbing series will be played at Peshawar on Friday and at Lahore on March 21 and 24.
The Pakistan score would have been even more imposing but occasional spinner Yuvraj Singh and left arm paceman Ashish Nehra put on the brakes with some accurate bowling after the opening bowlers had been punished for their wayward lines.
Afridi attacked paceman Lakshmipathy Balaji in the first over, edging him through fine leg for a boundary after Pakistan elected to bat.
He pulled left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan over mid-wicket for four and rocked on to his back foot for a huge six over square leg as Zaheer went for 38 from his three-over first spell.
Afridi raised his 23rd one-day 50 off just 33 balls, with an on-driven four off Balaji and then danced down the track to loft Virender Sehwag for two big sixes.
But just when he was looking set for a century, Afridi was bowled by Yuvraj Singh while going for an expansive slog-sweep.
Hameed and Yousuf Youhana (24) maintained the flow of runs before Yuvraj picked up his second wicket when Youhana dragged a full-length delivery on to his stumps.
