Accord on Pakistani prisoners in Kabul, Cuba reached

19 Mar, 2004

Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri has disclosed the arrival of an agreement with Washington about the future Pakistani prisoners in Afghan jails or Cuba's Guantanamo Bay.
Those will now go through a process of screening to separate those "who are taken as a threat and taken care of", he added.
In his off-the-cuff opening remarks at his joint news conference with visiting US Secretary of State Colin Powell here on Thursday, Kasuri said he could not give out more details except that it would now depend on the Interior Ministry to work out a mechanism in this connection.
The minister did not add to this brief statement nor fielded questions in this respect. However, it is believed that the bulk of the Pakistanis retained in Afghanistan after the American invasion two years ago runs into a few hundred while those flown out to interrogation centres at Guantanamo Bay has come to a couple of scores. Some were released in the recent months.
