SHC orders shifting of Sheikh Omar to Hyderabad

19 Mar, 2004

Sindh High Court on Thursday ordered the government to reverse the jail transfer of Sheikh Omar, facing death for the murder of US reporter Daniel Pearl, by April 6.
Ahmed Saeed Sheikh Omar, who was previously imprisoned in Hyderabad city, was in January flown to Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, but will now be moved back.
Officials had cited security reasons for the original decision to move Omar from Hyderabad, but lawyers appealing against his conviction asked the authorities to justify the transfer.
"The court asked the authorities to shift my client back to Hyderabad jail or the attorney general satisfies the court with the reasons which forced the authorities to shift him to Rawalpindi without the court's permission," defence lawyer Abdul Waheed Katpar told reporters outside the court.
