19 Mar, 2004

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has rolled back the 26 Water Supply schemes in the cantonment area creating apprehensions of acute water shortage in the area during the upcoming summer season.
Reliable sources told this scribe that RCB on the special instructions of Director General Military Land and Cantonment Board, Major General Mohammad Javed has blocked the funds of 26 water supply schemes worth Rs 25 million.
These schemes were being completed in Kamalabad, Chohar Harrpal, Misreal Road, Dhok Sayyedan, Chowk Millatabad and other areas.
The sources said that under these water supply schemes, RCB was to install a 6-inch pipeline in these areas under which thousands of residents of these areas would have benefited. It was being expected that after the completion of these water supply schemes, there would be no water shortage, they added.
RCB officials are unable to give any justification of the stoppage of the said schemes to the delegations, coming daily from the affected areas.
People have decided to hold strong protest against the closure of the water supply schemes if RCB does not restore the work.
