Ansari group to press India on human rights violations

24 Mar, 2004

All Parties Hurriyat Conference (Ansari group), set to resume peace talks with India, said on Tuesday it will again press New Delhi to stop human rights violations in occupied Kashmir.
Hurriyat Conference (Ansari group) last month threatened to pull out of talks with India, saying there had been no promised fall in the alleged violations by Indian occupation forces in Kashmir.
"In the first round (of talks), the Indian deputy prime minister had promised to stop human rights violations, but rights violations continue," a Hurriyat statement quoted its chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari as saying.
"We will tell them in clear terms to stop it so that no hurdle is created in the way of talks."
Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani and Hurriyat moderates started a dialogue in January, the first between the two sides since freedom movement started against Indian rule.
The Hurriyat and the government are due to hold their second round of talks at the weekend.
