Fujitsu and Mitsubishi to explore phone partnership

25 Mar, 2004

Japanese electronics conglomerates Fujitsu Ltd and Mitsubishi Electric Corp said on Wednesday they may jointly develop high-speed third-generation (3G) phones for the country's dominant mobile phone operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc.
The move comes as NTT DoCoMo promotes its 3G phone service known as FOMA. FOMA phones feature advanced services, high-resolution screens, integrated cameras and fast Internet connections but are more costly to develop.
Fujitsu and Mitsubishi, the fourth- and fifth-largest mobile phone suppliers respectively in Japan, said they were working out details on the potential timing and scope for the collaboration.
The phones would be based on the Symbian operating system, one of two operating systems designated by DoCoMo for FOMA phones.
The two companies said in a news release that they were considering a parternship "to accelerate their development efforts and quickly bring to market highly differentiated products".
