US troops in Afghanistan shot dead a suspected suicide bomber on Monday after the man drove a taxi loaded with explosives into a US military convoy, witnesses said.
The man got out of the car with a gun and was shot after he crashed the taxi into the convoy as it was about to enter a US base in the eastern city of Jalalabad, the witnesses said.
"The explosive stuff did not go off perhaps for some technical reason. The man got out of the car with a gun and the soldiers killed him before he opened fire," said one witness.
A US military official in the capital, Kabul, confirmed that soldiers had killed a gunman in Jalalabad but declined further comment.
