Punjab plans to enhance acreage of forest

Punjab Forest Department has formed a line of action for enhancing the acreage of forests in the province. Official sources told Business Recorder here on Friday that during the spring tree plantation drive 20 million plants would be planted in Punjab.
As many as 7 million plants would be planted in government forests, 1.45 million in other departments, 4.35 plants would be planted by defence department and 7.20 million plants would be planted by private sector.
Sources revealed that 28.3 million plants are available in 550 nurseries for fulfilling and achieving the target.
Under the programme, special attention has been focused on increasing the acreage of forests from 17 plants per acre to 29 plants per acre.
The Forest Department under its programme is making strenuous efforts for initiating plantation on 4527 new acreage, 3816 acres of regeneration, plants would also be planted in queues on 630 avenue miles while 629 acres of land would be brought in plantation in meadows, sources disclosed.
Apart from this, plants and saplings would be provided free of cost to the farmers under incentive package.
In addition to this, the facilities, like free education for children of farmers, health and marriage grant would be provided from social security institutions.
Under this scheme, 14,000 families would plant 62 million plants in the Punjab, the sources added.
