The law enforcement agencies have arrested the chairman of the Muhajir Qaumi Movement (MQM), Afaq Ahmed, from a residential complex in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Saturday morning.
Sources said that Afaq Ahmed was hiding for the last 16 months in the same complex.
He was arrested in a joint pre-dawn raid of police and rangers at a residential complex in Gulshan-e-Iqbal along with two other party activists, Mustafa and Riazuddin, sources said.
However, police sources said that Afaq Ahmed was arrested from DHA, Phase II.
In view of his arrest, security has been tightened in the city to maintain law and order in the wake of agitation against Afaq Ahmed's arrest.
The Sindh government has confirmed the arrest of Afaq Ahmed. According to a spokesman of the provincial government, he is wanted in several cases of murder, kidnapping, assault on public servants, rioting, etc.
APP ADDS: IGP, Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah on Saturday, confirming the arrest of Muhajir Qaumi Movement chief, Afaq Ahmad, said the action was taken on the basis of police cases registered against him in the past.
"He has not been arrested on the behest of any coalition partner of the present Sindh government," he clarified.
Police is investigating and on the basis of information from him, his other accomplices would also be arrested, who are wanted in other criminal cases, he added.
He was talking to reporters at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he came to launch the Chamber-Police Liaison Committee to improve law and order situation in the city.
Kamal said that information was being sought from various police stations for providing details of cases registered against Afaq Ahmad and his party men so that proper and detailed investigation could be started and his party men involved in criminal cases would be dealt according to law, he asserted.
