Egypt seeks to buy raw sugar

14 Apr, 2004

Egypt's Sugar and Integrated Industries Company (SIIC) will tender to buy 40,000 tonnes of raw sugar in late April or early May, a senior buying official said on Tuesday.
"We will tender for 40,000 tonnes of raw sugar...in the last week of April or the first week of May," the official told Reuters without specifying a shipment date.
SIIC cancelled a tender to buy 30,000 or 40,000 tonnes of raw sugar in February after saying the price was too high.
The official said SIIC was looking for raw sugar of any origin with a high degree of sugar content.
Officials say Egypt consumes about 2.2 million tonnes of sugar a year, with 1.4 million tonnes produced locally. About 60 percent of its imports come from Brazil.
