15 Apr, 2004

A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday reserved its verdict in a petition filed against self-finance scheme (SFS) in medical colleges.
Petitioner Syeda Shazia, a student of the Nishtar Medical College, Multan, has challenged the self-finance scheme in medical colleges, and termed it discriminatory, illegal and unconstitutional.
The petitioner through her counsel, M.D. Tahir, contended that the respondent, the Nishtar Medical College, Multan, has demanded Rs 80,000 as expenses for five-year MBBS course, which was impossible for her to pay, but contended that this act is against Islamic injunctions as well as provisions of the Constitution of Pakistan.
She, therefore, prayed to the court to declare self-finance scheme in educational institutions as illegal, un-Islamic, arbitrary and discriminatory. The court, after hearing her counsel, at length reserved its verdict.
