Technology stocks rose on Wednesday as strong earnings at cell-phone maker Motorola Inc and soothing comments on inflation from Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan buoyed investors' sentiment.
Blue chips clung near the unchanged mark, however, as disappointment over United Technologies Corp's forecast hit its shares and Alcoa Inc sank.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 4.54 points, or 0.04 percent, at 10,309.96.
The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 5.11 points, or 0.46 percent, at 1,123.26. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was up 9.59 points, or 0.48 percent, at 1,988.22.
