04 Jun, 2004

Cotton production has finally ended at 9.794 million bales reaching close to the last year production of slightly over 10 million bales.
Pakistan Cotton Ginners' Association on Thursday provided final figures of cotton production in the country. The detail reveals that Punjab produced 7.664 million bales while Sindh produced 2.129 till end of the season.
The production negated all reports about any major shortage of production or virus attacks on cotton plants.
However, the reports about shortage of production did benefit the growers who were able to sell cotton at the highest ever prices of Rs 3700 per maund.
The rising consumption in the country has pushed the mill owners to import more cotton and they booked two million bales from abroad. Last year they imported 1.3 million bales to meet their requirement.
This year predictions about cotton is encouraging world over. Higher production and lower prices are future of the coming season.
