Soyem of Imambargah blast victims held peacefully

04 Jun, 2004

Although the city remained under the grip of fear on Thursday due to Soyem of the Imam Ali Reza bomb blast victims, the people attended to their daily routine of going to their offices and business activities.
A bomb blast in the Imam Ali Reza Imambargah at M.A. Jinnah Road had killed 23 and wounded more than 55 Namaziz on Monday.
The Soyem was held at Imambargah Shah-e-Khurasan off M.A. Jinnah Road near Purani Numaish. A large number of the mourners, relative, friends and sympathisers attended the Soyem.
On this occasion, Ulema called upon the government to adopt measures for protecting people from the acts of terrorism that have become order of the day.
They said Islamic scholars as well as innocent people were being made target of suicide bombing and bomb blast and none of the attackers have so far been arrested.
The emotionally charged participants of the Soyem raised slogan for the unity of Ummah and against the law-enforcement agencies for their inability to deal with the growing acts of terrorism.
To avert any untoward situation, law-enforcement agencies had created road blocks and diverted vehicular traffic from different roads to Shahre Faisal and Shahre Quaideen which created traffic jams of worst kind. This traffic chaos continued till late in the evening.
At the same time, tension prevailed in Ancholi Society, Rizvia Society and Jaffar-e-Tayyar Society and attempts were made to disturb peace of the area, but timely intervention of the local people and law-enforcement agencies controlled the situation.
The countrywide strike call given by the MMA on Friday after Juma prayers has already started showing its effects. Rumours were rife that there would be no transport on roads, and all business and commercial centres would remain closed. However, there seems to be some division in between different Islamic parties whether or not to participate in the strike on Friday.
