Unisame gives suggestions for industrial policy

07 Jun, 2004

The Union of Small & Medium Enterprises (Unisame) on Sunday sent some suggestion for proposed Industrial Policy to the chief of Experts Advisory Cell, Ministry of Industries & Production.
IT HAS RECOMMENDED THAT:
The units must be competitive and cost of production should be reduced.
The supply of raw material should be ensured and duties, taxes, mark-ups should be revised specifically industry-wise to accommodate the ones which are facing tough competition.
Industrial zones should be established and entrepreneurs encouraged to set up industries for items which are imported and can be manufactured in Pakistan.
Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research has a long list of import substitutes and this can be commercially exploited.
The government should set up industries and give them to entrepreneurs on long term repayment schemes with low mark-up to give industrialisation a jump-start.
Large scale enterprises must be vigorously encouraged because small and medium enterprises are indirectly promoted and every effort must be made to arrange for collaborations in different areas with leading industries of the world to enable large sector to set up industries in engineering, construction, chemicals, synthetic yarns, electronics and heavy mechanical complexes.
SME promotion bureau should be set up to promote, encourage, facilitate, support and educate SMEs which need motivation.
The Industrial Policy should envisage industrialisation which goes all-out to facilitate a Pakistani or foreign investor.
