Managing Director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Brigadier Iftikhar Haider on Tuesday issued instructions for the installation of two generators of 500mw each at the two Gharo pumping stations.
The instructions are issued to deal with the unannounced and abrupt load-shedding Karachi Electric Supply Corporation carries out which adversely affect water supply to the city.
Siemens Pakistan has been approached to supply generators at its earliest. MD KWSB has said that the purchase of generators is being managed from KWSB resources.
Gharo pumping stations supply 26 million gallons water per day to Karachi. Its sudden discontinuation creates water shortage to the areas hooked with the Indus River sources.
During the last two weeks power breakdown has become frequent and has aggravated water crisis in the city.
Early Tuesday morning the KESC resorted to unannounced load-shedding and switched off power supply to many areas in Central, West, and East districts.
The power supply when restored remains so low that many electric gadgets refuse to respond to the available electricity.
