'Sea lords' groups snatch nets, fish stocks from poor fishermen

17 Jun, 2004

Some groups of sea lords snatched fishing nets and fish stock from poor fishermen by introducing themselves as officers of Sindh Fisheries Department, Sindh Fisheries sources said here on Wednesday.
While talking to Business Recorder they said that some 'sea lords' groups were involved in snatching fishing nets, fish and prawns from poor fishermen in different coastal areas of Sindh.
They said that these groups showed themselves as officers of Sindh Fisheries while snatching fishing nets and fish stock from poor fishermen.
However, Sindh Fisheries Department has taken serious notice of the incident.
Sindh government has imposed complete ban at destructive fishing nets such as Bhullo, Ghujjo and Katra which are harmful for seafood growth. Destructive fishing nets are also being used by some fishermen who have the support of sea lords groups of coastal areas. These groups are also involved in extorting money from poor fishermen.
Sindh Fisheries Department has sent some complaint letters regarding these groups to federal government to take notice of.
Sea lords groups tell the poor fishermen to use destructive fishing nets assuring them that Sindh government would not punish them as sea lords groups would protect them and defend them in case of any problem created by Sindh Fisheries Department. In return of this support the sea lords groups take money from the fishermen.
Coastal Area Fishermen Society (CAFS) has also criticised these groups and requested the federal government to take strict action against them and punish them.
CAFS Sources said these groups are active in the whole of Sindh coastal area but especially near Korangi Fish Harbour area.
CAFS also requested town police officer of Bin Qasim to register FIR against them.
