PPP workers and activists, led by Senator Jehangir Badr, Khalid Ahmed Kharal and other party leaders, held a protest rally and demonstration outside the local Press Club on Sunday, to condemn the murder of Munawwar Suhrawardy.
The protestors chanted anti-government slogans and demanded arrest of the murderers of Suhrawardy, who was killed in Karachi.
They were also carrying placards and banners with the slogans against the government and in favour of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Addressing the rally, Senator Jehangir Badr termed killing of Suhrawardy a political murder, saying he was a popular activist of the PPP and had no personal enmity.
Lauding his services for the party, he said he belonged to a poor family, who worked throughout his life for his party fellows and the cause of democracy.
Lashing out at the government, he said the present rulers had failed in addressing the issues, like terrorism, in the country, therefore, they should quit their offices forthwith.
The country needed an able leadership like that of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, who could get the country out of the prevailing crises, Badr claimed.
He also announced formation of a fund for financial help of the widow of Suhrawardy.
Earlier, the labour wing of the PPP held a condolence reference at Nisar Osmani auditorium of Lahore Press Club to remember the services of Munawwar Suhrawardy for the party.
Senator Jehangir Badr and other eminent party leaders, including Khalid Ahmed Kharal, Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas, Dilawar Butt, Syed Munir Hussain Gilani, Syed Naubahar Shah and Shahida Jabeen paid rich tributes to Suhrawardy and said that he rendered countless sacrifices for the cause of democracy.
