Indonesian share prices closed 0.21 percent higher on Tuesday as last-minute support for market leader Telkom took the market out of negative territory, dealers said.
The Jakarta Stock Exchange composite index closed up 1.478 points at 691.093, off a low of 683.923. Volume was 436.47 million shares worth 320.79 billion rupiah (34.16 million dollars). Gainers led losers 43 to 32, while 77 stocks were unchanged.
The rupiah was at 9,405-9,415 to the US dollar compared to Monday's close of 9,400-9,405.
"The index was still down two minutes before closing. It then moved into positive territory driven by Telkom and few other stocks, like Indosat and Antam," a dealer with Panin Securities said. State telecom firm Telkom gained 50 rupiah at 6,650 while long distance operator Indosat added 25 at 3,750 rupiah.
Cigarette maker Gudang Garam was flat at 13,200 rupiah while rival Sampoerna rose 25 rupiah at 4,925. Carmaker Astra International was down 50 at 5,450.
